Why I created How to People
Many of the skills that help people create and maintain connection aren’t taught directly.
We’re expected to know how frequently to reach out, how to show interest, what another person needs from us, when to give space, and how to work through competing expectations.
When we can’t do that intuitively, we may fall back on guessing, stereotypes, or rules that don’t fit the relationship in front of us.
Caring about someone and helping that person feel cared for are related, but not identical, skills. I created How to People because I believe communication and connection can be approached with curiosity rather than shame.
My perspective
I bring professional experience in communication science, clinical care, education, coaching, and leadership. I also have lived experience as a creative, neurospicy introvert who has had to explicitly learn the unwritten rules of communication and connection.
I haven’t mastered every part of human connection, but I am an educator, guide, and fellow practitioner. Iโm still learning and practicing, too.

How to People grows from my professional foundation, but its focus is broader: the everyday skills through which people make care visible, understand one another, maintain relationships, and solve problems together.
What How to People is not
How to People is not couples therapy, mental-health treatment, medical care, or individualized diagnosis or treatment.
It is not designed to address abusive or unsafe relationships, and it is not a substitute for care from an appropriate medical or mental-health professional.
It is also not a system for manipulating people, winning every disagreement, or following universal rules about men, women, autism, ADHD, or relationships.
People and relationships are more complicated than that. Inconvenient, but true.
The ideas offered here are invitations to understand, discuss, and experiment, not guarantees that any specific strategy will work for every person.
